Traveling With Little Kids. What I’ve Learned the Hard Way

Traveling with a small child is not easy. I know this first hand. I’ve flown with our 16 month old daughter more times than I can count and she isn’t even two yet. After all the tantrums, delays, and travel nightmares, here’s what I’ve learned.

Preparation makes all the difference.

Bring more snacks than you think you’ll need. Full bellies are always better than empty ones. Pack small toys, a sippy cup, a lightweight blanket, a full change of clothes for your child, and more diapers than you think is reasonable. Trust me.

Download favorite shows or videos ahead of time. I’m a firm believer in screen time over terrorizing an entire plane.

If you’re nursing or bottle feeding, feeding during take off and landing helps prevent ear discomfort and tears. If your child is old enough to walk, let them run around the airport before boarding to burn off energy.

Try to get a window seat if you can. Wear your baby carrier through security and while boarding to keep your hands free.

Don’t forget about yourself. Pack snacks, migraine medication, and stay hydrated. If your baby can drink water, keep them hydrated too.

When checking bags, check your car seat and gate check your stroller for an easier airport experience.

Traveling with little kids will never be perfect, but it is possible. You’re not bothering anyone. You’re just a parent doing your best.
